Hand Seal Engraving
Hand seal engraving is the most traditional form of signet ring engraving. The design is cut by hand into the ring in reverse, allowing the finished ring to be pressed into wax to create a raised impression.
This process requires exceptional skill. The engraver works entirely freehand, cutting the design deeply into the metal so that every line reads correctly when stamped. There is no margin for correction. Each cut must be precise, deliberate, and final.
The Process
Our hand seal engravings are executed in London by a master hand seal engraver using traditional tools and techniques. The engraving is cut deeper than standard hand engraving to ensure a clean, legible impression and lasting definition over generations.
Because the design is engraved in reverse, the engraver must visualise the final seal at every stage. This is a discipline distinct from standard engraving and one that few engravers still practise.
Crests, Emblems, and Initials
Seal engraving is best suited to crests, heraldic emblems, and carefully considered initials.
The result is an engraving with authority and purpose. When worn, the ring carries the quiet weight of tradition. When used as a seal, it performs exactly as signet rings were originally intended to do.
