JEWELLERY CARE & MAINTENANCE
Every piece from Breners of London is made with care and designed to last. As with all fine jewellery, considered wear and proper care will ensure it remains in excellent condition for years to come. The guidance below outlines best practice.
ACTIVITIES
We recommend removing jewellery before applying skincare, fragrances, or cosmetics. Certain ingredients can accumulate on precious metals over time and may accelerate wear.
Jewellery should also be removed during exercise, manual work, or any activity involving physical strain or impact. This includes household tasks or lifting heavy objects, where pressure, abrasion, snagging, or misplacement may result in damage or loss.
GENTLE HANDLING
We work with durable gemstones, including sapphires and diamonds. While highly resistant to wear, these stones are not indestructible and may chip if struck at a particular angle or with sufficient force. Care should be taken to avoid impact with other hard surfaces.
The same applies to the metal itself. Gold and platinum are hardwearing materials, but can be dented or distorted by impact or sustained pressure.
CLEANING
To clean your piece, soak it in warm to hot water for around 20 minutes with a few drops of mild dish detergent. Use a soft-bristled brush, such as a baby toothbrush reserved for this purpose, to gently remove any buildup, particularly around stone settings. Repeat if necessary. Pat the piece dry with a soft cloth or kitchen paper, allow it to air-dry completely, then polish with a jewellery cloth for a subtle, lasting finish.
Avoid household cleaners containing harsh chemicals, as these can damage or discolour the metal. Do not use abrasive cleaners as they may scratch the surface. For guidance specific to your piece, we recommend contacting us directly.
CLEANING DELICATES
For pieces with softer gemstones such as emeralds, or porous materials such as pearls and opals, clean gently using a jewellery cloth. Do not soak these pieces in water, as this can damage the organic materials.
We do not recommend regular ultrasonic cleaning. Frequent use can loosen stones and may cause damage. Pieces containing soft or porous gemstones should never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner, as this can cause irreversible harm.
